Turn a proposed settlement into an action list
If you are a Birmingham resident reviewing a divorce proposal, write down what each term would require after signing. An agreement to keep an asset is only the start of the implementation discussion.
- Home: identify the proposed buyout, financing step, possession arrangements, and unresolved carrying costs.
- Accounts: list the institution, documents needed, proposed transfer process, and questions for the plan administrator or financial professional.
- Debts and payments: record who is expected to act, the proposed timing, and how completion would be documented.
- Unfinished steps: flag any term that depends on financing, a valuation, or information you have not received.
Bring the complete draft, including attachments, to a settlement consultation. Mark the terms you cannot explain in your own words so the review starts with the decisions that need clarification.
Show how compensation is actually paid
A salary figure may leave out important features of a compensation package. If your household receives commissions, bonuses, equity awards, or deferred payments, organize the records by payment type.
- Regular earnings: recent pay statements and an explanation of changes in hours or base compensation.
- Variable payments: payment history and the written terms describing how an award is earned.
- Future or restricted benefits: grant notices, vesting schedules, plan documents, and any event affecting access.
Keep expected payments separate from money already received. Those records can inform both property discussions and a spousal support review. Prepare a separate household budget so the conversation addresses usable income as well as account values.

Oakland County’s Circuit Court Family Division handles divorce, custody, and parenting time matters. Residence in a particular city does not by itself resolve every jurisdiction or venue question, especially where another court has already entered an order.
