Start with the question you need to resolve
If your concern is an upcoming exchange, identify the exact disputed dates and the provision in your order first. If an exchange has already been missed, keep the complete messages and a factual record of what happened. Three documents to put side by side
- The current order. Include the judgment, later orders, and any schedule incorporated by reference.
- The child’s school calendar. Use the calendar that applies to the child, including the start and end of winter break.
- The actual calendar dates. Mark the holiday periods, regular weekends, and proposed travel so overlaps are visible.
A county-office holiday calendar tells you when offices close. It does not determine which parent has a child. A sample schedule is useful for drafting; it is not a substitute for reading the requirements in your own case.
What if the order does not mention the holiday?
Read the entire order before concluding that a holiday is unaddressed. Check general parenting time language, school-break provisions, incorporated schedules, and later amendments. If the language remains unclear, identify the precise question and seek clarification before relying on an assumption.
A proposed written agreement can help define a resolution, but do not assume that an informal exchange of messages permanently changes a court order. Discuss whether a stipulation and court order are needed for the intended change.

If the other parent threatens to deny the exchange
Save the complete communication and identify the provision at issue. Respond with a concise, child-focused request for clarification. If the holiday is approaching, contact your attorney promptly so there is time to consider the available procedure.
Do not create a confrontation at the other parent’s home, disregard a protective order, or put the child in the middle. Explain any safety concern when seeking help. A lawyer can assess whether an enforcement request, clarification, or other court relief fits the circumstances; a particular holiday outcome cannot be promised.
If parenting time has already been denied
- Record the facts. Note the ordered date, time and location; what happened; and the relevant messages.
- Keep the order with the record. Identify the specific provision you believe was violated.
- Review the FOC process promptly. Oakland County’s online complaint form states that it addresses denials within the last 56 days. Use the current form and instructions; do not wait until the deadline.
- Plan for the next exchange. Discuss how to address the existing dispute and reduce uncertainty about the next holiday.
