Overnights aren't just parenting time. They're money.

The Michigan Child Support Formula includes a parental time offset: as the paying parent's annual overnights rise, support falls — continuously, night by night. Which means how your schedule is drafted, down to holidays and summers, has financial consequences most parents never see coming. Pick a schedule and watch the split.

The part nobody explains

Why every overnight matters

Three things most parents learn too late:

1. The offset is continuous, not a cliff. There's no magic number where support suddenly changes. Every overnight in the annual count moves the formula — which means holiday schedules, summer blocks, and "extra" nights all have a dollar value attached.
2. The count comes from the order, not from real life. The formula generally uses the overnights in your parenting time order. If your actual schedule differs from the order, the paperwork — not your calendar — usually controls until it's modified.
3. Schedules get negotiated with money invisible. Parents routinely agree to schedules without anyone showing them the support implications. That's not a reason to fight for nights you don't want — courts see through overnight-chasing — but it is a reason to understand the full picture before you sign.

Know what your schedule really means — before you agree to it.
