With that information in mind, what are the prevalent crimes in Michigan that you should know about?

Property Crimes

About 78% of the crimes in Michigan are property crimes. There were more than a hundred thousand property crimes reported in 2019 in the State of Michigan. This is lower than the national rate compared to other states which show about 85% of their crimes are property crimes. 

What are the property crimes common in Michigan?

There are three common property crimes commonly committed in Michigan. Larceny is the first crime. Michigan’s rate of 1,121 shows that the larceny incidents per 100,000 residents are lower than the nationwide rate of 1,550 per 100,000 and is the eighth lowest among states.

The second common property crime is Burglary, followed by motor vehicle theft. For the crime of Burglary, there were an estimated twenty-eight thousand break-ins in the State of Michigan. This made the State rank in the middle among the fifty states. 

On the other hand, the crime of Motor vehicle theft in Michigan shows 178 motor vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents. This rate was lower than the national rate and the 20th lowest rate compared to all states.

Violent Crimes

There are also violent crimes in Michigan. This classification covers about 22% of the total crimes in the State of Michigan. Compared to property crimes, the common problem that people see with violent crimes is the fact that it is higher by 7% to the nationwide average of around 15% coverage nationwide. But, how about the numbers? Generally, even with the higher than national average rate, violent crimes in Michigan are not considered a problem.

The State of Michigan is considered the 16th least violent state in the United States.

What are the violent crimes common in Michigan?

The violent crimes in Michigan consist of aggravated assault, robbery, rape, and murder. 

In terms of the numbers, rape is the most prevalent violent crime in Michigan. It has the 4th highest rate of rape with about 7,235 reported rapes in 2019 in Michigan

Second, aggravated assault is the second most common violent crime committed in the State of Michigan. It is the 14th highest of all the states in the United States.

For the crime of robbery, the State of Michigan has the 20th lowest robbery rate among the States. 

Finally, the state of Michigan is the 16th highest in the country when it comes to the rate of murder.
