How To Prevent Black Ice Accidents

|

Accidents in black ice cases often occur in Michigan. Black ice is one of the big problems in Michigan that you need to be very aware of whenever you are driving there.

Between 2015 and 2019, there were around 220,526 winter-related crashes in Michigan. This number just keeps on getting higher even though there are more information dissemination drives in the State.

The reason for this is that driving in black ice is an individual task that requires

To prevent black ice accident cases, you should keep in mind that the following things can be done.

Do not make any sudden driving moves

Taking it slow and driving slowly is one of the things that you should follow whenever you are driving on a snowy slope. Avoid making any sudden moves or turning the wheels suddenly as you are not sure of the treachery that awaits you while driving.

Make sure that you smoothly lift your foot off the accelerator and glide across the ice. It is very dangerous to drive fast when there is black ice but it is even more dangerous to make sudden moves.

Make slow shifts to lower gears

Whenever you are making a move, make sure that you shift to lower gear. You must allow yourself some time when you are shifting gears. It is problematic for you to be in a rush when driving in snow.

If possible, take your time when driving on black ice to prevent any further accidents. You can never get your life back.

Activate Your Anti-Lock Brake System

If you have a new vehicle, you can always activate the anti-lock brake system. This will help you if you start skidding off the road.

It also prevents the vehicle from spinning out. If the front end of your vehicle is sliding, steer in the opposite direction. If it is the back end that is sliding, steer in the same direction and try to go as slowly as possible.

Invest in Winter Tires

It is important to try and invest in better tires that can handle the conditions of the environment. Do not skimp on your health and safety especially when it is to prevent any accidents from happening.

Drive below the speed limit

When the situation is already a black ice situation, you must try to drive slowly. Drive the speed limit when the black ice conditions no longer exist. This is to protect you and your safety.

These are the steps to take to prevent black ice accidents. Of course, some other things would help you prevent accidents but how about a traffic ticket in times of snow in Michigan? We will discuss this in another article.
