What Does It Mean If You’re Dizzy After A Car Accident?

|

After a vehicle accident occurs, it is crucial for those involved to assess themselves and others around them for injuries. We strongly encourage any person who has been in a vehicle accident to seek medical treatment immediately, even if they do not feel much pain. This is especially important if individuals begin to feel dizzy after a car accident because this could reveal a significant underlying injury.

What Can Cause Dizziness After a Vehicle Accident?

There may be various reasons why an individual experiences dizziness after a vehicle accident, including the following:

  • Cervicogenic Dizziness. This is commonly referred to as vertigo, and this can occur after a vehicle accident. Typically, vertigo is caused by damage to a region in the neck, and this can lead to a sensation making it feel like you have no control over your balance, and it can feel like the room is spinning. When a region of the neck is injured, there are nerves in the neck that could be damaged, and this can disrupt the signal the brain sends to maintain balance.
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. BPPV typically occurs as a result of the violent movement of the head, which is not uncommon in a vehicle accident. As opposed to vertigo caused by damage to nerves in the neck, this type of vertigo is a result of nerves in the inner ear that tell the brain the position of the head. If the head is violently jerked around, this could result in nerves being moved from their normal location to other areas of the inner ear.
  • Vascular Damage. If blood vessels inside the neck sustain injuries, this could result in restricted blood flow to and from the brain. Individuals sometimes describe this as pain in the back of the head that grows stronger over time, but vascular damage can certainly lead to dizziness. This type of injury must be treated immediately, or it could result in significant brain injuries or death.
  • Brain Injury. Brain injuries are a common cause of dizziness after death. Anytime a person sustains a bump or blows to the head or body, or if they sustain any type of penetrating brain injury, one of the most common symptoms is dizziness. Unfortunately, dizziness is a relatively minor symptom associated with brain injuries. The underlying brain injury could be causing much more damage. Brain injuries must be treated promptly to prevent them from worsening and causing long-term damage.

It is crucial for all car accident victims to seek medical treatment immediately, especially if they feel any type of dizziness. There is no ability to pinpoint the cause of the dizziness on the side of the road, and a medical professional needs to conduct a complete battery of tests to ensure that a person has not sustained some sort of severe trauma.

Even if you feel fine right after a vehicle accident occurs, please go to an emergency department so you can be evaluated by a doctor. Not only is this the best way to ensure your health and well-being, but it can also establish a link between the incident and any injuries that have occurred. Insurance carriers will look and how quickly you saw medical care if you are making a claim for injury compensation.
