What Are The Many Penalties To Expect For The Uninsured in Michigan?

|

Accidents happen every day. Nobody can predict when an accident may happen. However, even if you cannot predict when the accident may happen, you may at least prepare for it.

In the article series Everything You Need To Know About Car Insurance Coverage in Michigan, we have discussed the more important aspects of insurance coverage in the State of Michigan.

To reiterate, in the United States, accidents are the third leading cause of death. For people between the age of 25 to 44, it is often the cause of death. Of course, this is why it makes sense to have a comprehensive insurance policy that could cover your needs, or your family’s needs when an accident happens.

Here at Haque Legal, it is our goal to make sure that you have the protection you need in times of trouble. We want to answer all of your questions and therefore we have created this article series that would discuss everything you need to know about car insurance coverage in the state of Michigan.

In this part, we continue our discussion on Everything You Need To Know About Car Insurance Coverage in Michigan: Uninsured Motorist Coverage. Let us continue

What are the other penalties that you should expect?

When convicted for Driving without Insurance, you should expect many other challenges that will come your way. Other than the penalties involved, you should expect to face the following penalties as well:

The Secretary of State will not renew your plates

The Secretary of State of Michigan will not allow you to renew, transfer, replace, or purchase a new registration for your vehicle. You need to prove that you have auto insurance to renew your plates and registration. This can be found in MCL 257.328(1) and MCL 257.227a(1).

You cannot sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering

If the roles were reversed and you were the one hit or rear-ended by another vehicle, you cannot sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering. If you were injured in a car accident and the insurance of your vehicle does not exist you cannot sue the driver at fault for the pain and suffering even if you are a hundred percent innocent relating to the accident. You will not have any right to go after the driver at fault for the pain and compensation for your suffering and this is the price you have to pay for failing to follow the insurance laws in Michigan.

You have to pay for your medical expenses

You have to pay for your medical expenses as part of the punishments that you have to suffer for driving an uninsured vehicle. Under normal circumstances, if you have no-fault insurance, you will be able to pay for your medical expenses through the insurance premiums. Your needs will most probably be covered by the insurance company in the policy provider that you have hired to provide you with the insurance.

Unfortunately, if you are on the other side and you are the driver who did not get the right insurance, you will have to face the reality that you have to pay for your medical expenses, even if you are not the party at fault.

You will not be reimbursed for lost wages

You will not be reimbursed for the lost wages in case you have to face recuperating for your injury. It is well within your right to have your insurance company pay for your lost wages in case you have to recuperate after the accident. Unfortunately, if you do not have insurance to cover your lost wages you will not be entitled to any of it. Basically, without insurance, you have to pay for everything and you have no money or no source that you can get the wages you lost from.

This is another unfortunate offshoot of the factor that you draw a vehicle that does not have insurance in the state of Michigan.

There are a lot of other unfortunate things that you would not expect to pay but you will pay if you drive without insurance in Michigan.

If you have health insurance, you may have some portion of the expenses covered but this will never be enough. In the next part of this article series, we will continue the discussion on the penalties to expect.

Contact Your Insurance Company And Your Lawyer

If you have been involved in a car collision in Michigan, make sure that you are protected. By contacting your insurance company, you will have what you need in terms of their decision and see if they just need a little nudge in the right direction.

If the answer of the insurance company is not positive on your claim, then you need to make sure that you will get going with your complaint.

But what if you do not have insurance, as in the topic that we have in this article? You need to get the right lawyer.

A lawyer can help you get started with your claim. A lawyer at Haque Legal will see to it that your needs are met from beginning to the end of the proceedings. You are always in good hands with Haque Legal and what it has to offer.
