The Situation

One of the most devastating facts that we have learned in our business is the fact that some individuals still decide not to get insured.

In the State of Michigan, around 21% of the drivers do not have the no-fault insurance that is required by law. Again, the no-fault insurance is required by law for an owner of a motor vehicle or an individual driving a motor vehicle. Some drivers in Michigan only get the minimum just to comply with the law while there are those that do not even try.  It is devastating to find out that almost a fourth of the people who are driving are not even insured while we have also discussed that some are underinsured.

What does this mean for you?

This means that if you are involved in a car crash in Michigan there is only that small portion that would be paid by the insurance of the other party or there is no insurance company that would pay you. You have a 1 in 5 chance that you will be unable to receive full compensation from the insurance.

There is also a significant risk that the people involved in crashes that do not have insurance will do hit and run and you will be unable to get any claims from their insurance.

How do you protect yourself?

You will protect yourself through the process of getting your uninsured motorist coverage. This is the topic that we will be discussing in the next series of articles.

Use of our clients and potential clients would ask us about whether or not they can depend on the other party’s insurance to claim their compensation, especially for the payment of their medical expenses. While there are people who have the right insurance coverage that would pay for the claims and damages caused to a third party we cannot fully depend on that idea because some people do not even have insurance and this is where the uninsured motorist coverage in Michigan comes in.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage: An Introduction

The uninsured motorist coverage applies when there is an injured person by an at-fault driver who does not have any coverage to cover the damages to the injured person. It is also the insurance coverage that aims to protect the person who is injured in a hit-and-run accident and the driver just cause of unidentified while there is no insurance coverage to be found.

Do I need this even if I have insurance already?

The uninsured motorist coverage is needed when the injured person does not know where or who to claim their compensation from. Generally, the insurance policy that you have on your motor vehicle will cover any damages to the vehicle or any injuries caused to a third party or a passenger of the vehicle. When you have uninsured motorist coverage you are sure that your insurance company will be able to fill in the shoes of the supposedly other insurance company that should have paid you in the first place if it exists

While getting an uninsured motorist coverage is not required of you and is certainly not necessary for you you need to make sure that you have it, especially when you need it. In the next series of articles, we will be discussing this optional insurance coverage that you may want to have for full protection. What are the legal rights and obligations under this coverage? What should you expect? We will discuss this thoroughly in the article series.
