The State of Crime in Michigan for 2021

|

In the past month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has reported that there are over 11 million criminal offenses in the United States. This has been reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) in 2021 via NIBRS, 2021; NIBRS Estimates, 2021; The Transition to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS): A Comparison of 2020 and 2021 NIBRS Estimates; and Crime in the United States (CIUS), 2021

With that, let us look at the state of crime in Michigan.

General Outlook

The general outlook on the state of crime in Michigan is mixed. It hosts 4 of the top 20 most violent cities in the nation such as Saginaw, Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Lansing. On the other side of the fence, it also hosts the four communities with the fewest property crimes, including Independence Township, White Lake Township, West Bloomfield, and Orion Township.

Analysis

If we analyze the data that has been reported, it has been noted that nationally, the United States has an increase of 1% in crimes. This includes a 4.3% increase in the number of homicides.

The number of crimes in the State of Michigan has increased at a more rapid pace than the 1% national average. The total number of crimes in the State of Michigan has increased by 4.7%. The good number is that in the whole State of Michigan, homicides decreased by 6.3%.

According to the Michigan Sheriffs Association Director Matthew M. Saxton, this can be attributed to one thing – that some of the increases to the national defund-the-police movement that arose in the wake of George Floyd, police brutality protests.

“Law enforcement during 2021, and 2020 has been dealing with some extraordinary times. Whether they were defunded or not, the profession has been demonized by federal, state, and local politicians and has hampered law enforcement’s ability to perform their duties of keeping communities safe.”

Legally speaking, the State of Michigan currently has pending bills that aim to help reduce criminality in the State.

We will provide an update again by next year and we will see whether the numbers have changed.
