What are the grounds for annulment?
Other than the grounds listed in parts one and two of our article series, there are also other grounds for annulment.
Concealed Intent
In instances where one of the parties conceals the thought they never intended to consummate the marriage or have sexual intercourse with the other party, it is considered as a ground for annulment. Concealed intent in getting married is considered as one of the more problematic aspects of entering into the union.
The intent is hard to prove and there are a lot of requirements as to how one can prove the intention of the party at the time of the marriage. Here we go back to the definition of what the purpose of marriage is and that is for the confirmation of the love between the husband and wife.
When one of the parties conceals the fact that and has no intention to consummate the marriage or that they entered into the marriage as a joke it is very obvious that the marriage is a sham on his or her part.
Data gathering and evidence gathering when the ground for an annulment is concealed intent is certainly a challenge. In most of the cases that we have handled the intent of the parties may be reflected on his actions as well as his or her failure to fully consummate the marriage when it should have been consummated on the wedding night.

Improper Ceremony
The ceremony that occurred at the time of the union of the parties is very important. While the process in itself is not set by a standard it must be performed by an individual who has the legal authority to perform marriages.
If the solemnizing officer or the individual who performed the marriage is not allowed by law to perform such marriage then it can be considered as if the wedding did not exist and that the wedding is void from the beginning.
Other Reasons
Other reasons could be used as a ground for annulment. Other reasons have to do with the ability of a party to freely consent to the marriage, the application of the foreign law, and other reasons that have to do with the marriage and that affect its validity.
What are not grounds for annulment?
There are other grounds for annulment that are used in other States but are not allowed to be used in Michigan. They are the following:
Length of the Marriage
The length of the marriage of the parties is not a ground for an annulment. Whether the parties have just been married for 72 hours and then decided to separate or they have been married in 1 month or a year, it does not affect the validity of the marriage. However, the parties can use the grounds listed above and its discovery, regardless of the length of the marriage, as a ground for annulment. It is only the length of the marriage that cannot stand alone.
Not Living Together
There are some instances where the parties claimed that they have not lived together and or therefore should not be considered as having been married. This is not a ground for annulment and should not be used as such by the parties.
Change of Mind
Perhaps one of the funniest grounds for an annulment but have been used is the change of mind or finding out that you do not like your spouse or that your spouse does not have the amount of money that you thought he or she has or that you hate his or her habits.
Changing your mind after seeing what you have committed to for the rest of your life is not a valid reason for you to file for an annulment. We do recommend that you try filing for a divorce.
